Pricing questions, answered

How do I price my baked goods?

Add up what your ingredients cost for one batch, then add your time and overhead. Divide by how many pieces the batch makes to get your cost per piece, and set a price that leaves the profit margin you want. This calculator does each of those steps for you.

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is the share of your selling price that's profit. Markup is how much you add on top of your cost. A cookie that costs $1.00 to make and sells for $2.50 has a 60% margin, which is the same as a 150% markup.

What profit margin should a home bakery aim for?

There's no single right number. It depends on your local market, your costs and how much of your time you've counted. This calculator starts at 60% and rates every price as healthy, fair, thin or a loss, so you can see where to adjust.

Should I include my time in the cost?

Yes. If you leave your time out, your price only covers ingredients and every hour you spend baking is unpaid. Add your hours and an hourly rate under “Your time and extras.”

Are my recipes saved?

Yes, in this browser only. Nothing you enter is sent to HumbleBake and no account is needed. Clearing your browsing data or switching devices won't bring them along. HumbleBake bakers get recipe costing saved to their account and linked to their products.
